In the 1950s Van Cleef & Arpels opened a new venture, the Boutique. It was an enterprise intended to appeal to the young and mass affluent, a new generation who had their own "codes and icons". With the end of World War II, and the advent of a new generation, the family intuited that the changes in Western society like transformation of family structures, access to education, and increasing wealth would lead to the formation of youth "subcultures and countercultures in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s", as one social scientist put it. Together with the Péry workshop, Van Cleef & Arpels introduced new and amusing designs that rejected seriousness and boldly referenced popular culture in precious metals and gems with wit and style.
