Clément Massier 'Pavot' Vase
Regular price
$17,500
This Clément Massier vase, modeled after a poppy seed capsule, evokes both natural beauty and the dreamlike mysteries of the unconscious. Long associated with sleep, regeneration, and transcendence through its opiate properties, the poppy was a fitting motif for the Art Nouveau movement’s fascination with nature’s sensual and mystical dimensions. The vase’s surface is adorned with delicate silhouettes of poppy seed capsules, reinforcing its poetic symbolism.

Massier’s studio was located in Golfe-Juan, a small village near Cannes on France’s southern coast. He was renowned for his “reflets métalliques” glazes—iridescent finishes achieved through a complex, multi-step process. Each piece was first bisque-fired, then glazed and re-fired, before being coated in a clay slip containing metallic compounds. A final firing in a reduction kiln produced the thin metallic film that gives the work its shimmering, iridescent quality. Contemporary accounts note that achieving the desired layers of iridescence could require up to five separate firings.
