Rembrandt Bugatti "Deux vautours, l'un couché" Bronze Sculpture
These dramatically posed African griffon vultures have their wings spread wide, while one crouches with its wings tucked to the side to cool itself down. Each vulture faces a different direction, one towards the west, and the other towards the east. The modeling is crisp and angular, with details pared down to accentuate the bird’s sleek, hard lines. The interplay of light and shadow enhances the sense of tension and movement, as if the birds are poised for flight or battle, embodying a raw and untamed energy.

For fifteen years, Bugatti studied vultures: their behaviors, their signals, their sounds, each their own sensory world. Without ever having studied their anatomy, Bugatti will model each vulture. This unique approach to morphology make us completely forget that the animals live behind the scenes, in cages and enclosures.
